Race Report Compilation: Yolande Speedy – Back into some racing after Expedition Africa

Feeling a little tender after our little AR in the Namaqua West Coast I found I needed to ease back slowly into racing.
I started with more a 5km hobble than a run at Trail Adventure’s Southdowns night race. The fairly uneven grass paths proved to be surprisingly challenging for my tender feet and I have nothing more to report than making the finish there. :p

Another weeks recovery and Trail Adventure’s CopperLeaf 10km night run went a lot better! I ran with Nicky Booyens who was taking it ‘easy’ being pre comrades week. That helped me to push my pace and we crossed the line together. She did admittedly slow down her pace for me so I’ll take that as a second and a win for Nicky.

Next up was the 50km!
USN MTB Cup – Big Red Barn
It felt good to be back on my Cannondale riding the super fun barn trails!
About 20kms in I was together with the leading 2 ladies but a miss timed screw through my back tire, stop to repair and pump left me in 3rd place minutes behind. I chased back catching up to 2nd place in the last km. I was happy with how my legs felt, finally rid of all the cobwebs! Well done to Ronel Van Wyk Nel for taking the win and to Anni Summer for 3rd!.

The following day I teamed up with Jonathan for the 2nd Kinetic Adventure Sprint race at Marks Park Emmarentia.
We got off to a flying start on the first run leg, Jonathan’s nav spot on and reached the transition first place mixed. A bit of a slower transition had us leaving for the cycle leg just behind Jabberwock. We were soon together with them and Keyhealth Nevarest Origin men’s team. A few CPs on and we made a gap on Jabberwock. It was a fast-paced leg as we kept the pace up trying to increase our lead. We came into transition in 1st place overall after Keyhealth Nevarest origin made a slight nav error going straight past a CP. Next up was the final trek, kayak and obstacle leg. It took us a while to find our legs but we kept a steady pace Keyhealth Nevarest Origin catching us several kilometres in. All went smoothly and we reached the kayaks together. Spotting the first CP a distance away we turned sooner and had the overall lead into the final sprint home. This is where our race took a turn though as there was one last CP and we left our map in the kayak. In the time we took to find the CP we lost several places and reached the final obstacle section just behind team Jabberwock. We crossed the line in 2nd place; except for our error having had a solid and fun race!

Well done to Team Jabberwock and Team Keyhealth Nevarest Origin for their wins!

Last race to report on for the meantime was Trail Adventure’s Rietvlei night run. I felt pretty good and achieved my fastest time in the 10km. I took the win ahead of Nicky, granted she’s on post comrades; legs but I’ll claim it :).

Big thanks to all my sponsors KeyHealth Nevarest Team, KeyHealth Medical Scheme, Toyota SA, GT Radial South Africa, First Ascent, ASG South Africa and Epic Sports Cycles – Centurion.

Till next time, happy trails!!
