Race Report: Calen Hastie – Warrior #7

The 2nd last warrior race of the year took place in Meerandal. Coming into this race I felt like my body was not as well prepared in terms of my running fitness but my obstacle cardiovascular fitness was far better. I had previously come out of a very hectic month of racing in August and I had a bit of runner’s knee. So I took my time to recover properly and only managed to get 2 lighter sessions of running in just prior to the race.

I took the first few km’s of the race at a steadier pace than the second half. I kept my 4th place while running with Conrad and some of the guys from OFCT. From the 2nd half of the race I started picking up my pace as I was feeling strong and good and managed to close the gap on Conrad coming into the mud monster and rope traverse.

From then on it was a neck and neck battle to the iron rig.

The iron rig was the defining moment in the race for me. Nelius and Conrad had just gone into the rig as I followed. Both of them fell off on their first attempts due to their hands still being wet from the previous tower or rage. I grabbed the opportunity and powered through the obstacle coming into 1st position. The finishing stretch was the toughest in the whole race as I powered through to keep the lead. I managed to finish in 1st place with a time of 53:44 seconds.

This has been a long-awaited victory and I look forward to performing at the final warrior for the year at NASREC.

A big thank you to God and my team for their support and to the sponsors for their support. It’s a blessing to be able to be healthy and live to the fullest of your ability.
