Race Report: Antonie Joubert – XCO #3

The past weekend I raced at Voortrekker Monument at the third round of the Gauteng XCO cup. I was not exactly sure what to expect other than a lot of rocky single tracks like all bike parks in the Gauteng area. Myself and my younger brother went to the track on Friday to check out the track. Usually we do one spotter lap and then one hot lap but the track didn’t have any technical sections so we decided to call it a day after the spotter lap.

Race day: The race started pretty fast sending us up the amphitheater next to the stairs which was very steep. I had a really good start but I quickly realized that I didn’t have the legs to keep up with the leaders. I was slowly falling behind and loosing a few places in the first 3 laps. Nearing the end of the third lap I was on the wheel of two guys struggling to keep up when the front one of the two made a mistake at some stairs and I saw my chance to pass and open a gap. All of a sudden my legs felt quite good and I had the power to leave them behind and close the gap on the leaders.

Not sure of my position I was quite relieved seeing the results after the race. I rode myself into 3rd place in the U/23 cat.

Huge thanks to First Ascent, Toyota, Keyhealth and ASG for the awesome supplements making life easier on and of the bike. Hope to keep this up further in the series.
