Eden Triathlon League #3

2 February 2020 – Groot Brakriver

Chrissie Viljoen – this was my first race at the new Eden triathlon venue in Groot Brakriver. The 1.5km swim consisted of 2 laps in the lagoon…apparently, not a big enough lagoon as myself and a lady in a lime green cap kept swimming into each other. It is always a laugh afterwards to see on the watch GPS just how skew you swim, LOL.

I exited the water with two women and although I struggled to get the wetsuit off, I managed to gain a few seconds on them in transition. The 40km bike consisted of four laps of a very undulating road overlooking the coast. My strategy was to see if I could go out a little faster on the first lap to try and shake the gals on my tail, but at each turn around point they were still right there, yikes! This forced me to ride a little harder than I was comfortable with and going into transition with a slender lead, I knew I needed a very speedy T2 to have a realistic chance of winning the race.

I did just that and the 30 seconds or so I gained was enough to get a gap on the 10km run and to sustain it to the end.

When I compared my times with second and third I realised that I wasn’t the stronger athlete on the day, as our times across the disciplines were very similar, the only difference being quicker transition times – taking the shortest racing lines and maximising the downhills.

So grateful to be healthy and racing again. After all the years I still love it!! ❤️
