Bennie Roux – Fish River Canyon Ultra 100km

The Fish River Canyon in the South of Namibia is the second largest in the world and the largest in Africa, in places it is 27kms wide and up to 550m deep in total it is over 160km long. Fish River canyon tours should be on everyone’s list of things to see before they die. It is a natural wonder that should not be missed when visiting Southern Africa.

Post race depression.  The Fish River trail is a highlight on my calendar and it is not just the beauty of the canyon but also the friendly Namibian people, who always go out of their way to make the race even more special.  A special mention to Gerhard de Kock who invited me for the second year in a row. (Normally people don’t invite me for a second year …….. Just Joking)

I’m, actually sad to be back so soon, next year I will stay for a week after the race.

Back to the race report, weather was good and we expected the sun to play a factor in the afternoon, and the sun certainly didn’t disappoint anyone this year, as it got extremely hot.

Running conditions was a bit harder this year and the sand was thick as usual.

I got to the drop in the lead bunch but could keep up with those mavericks from Capetown.

I was 5th at the bottom with no one in sight and had to work hard all the way to make up positions and am much chaffed to walk away with 3rd overall and 1st Veteran.
