Race Report: Rabbit Series Trail Run

It was time again for the next event in the Rabbit Series Trail Runs, this time at Rustig in the Magaliesberg. Dubbed the “Nogwaja Rabbit Series Trail run”, these events always serve up a tough route and plenty of climbing! This was to be no different, with 20kms of hard trails and 850m of climb thrown in…

Rustig is a really great venue, and some fantastic hiking trails on offer for not so fit trail runners out there. Great to have fellow Nevarest athletes Ruan van der Merwe and Cobus van Zyl toeing the start line with me, making for good banter and comradery! It was a fast start with a largish bunch of about 10 guys. I settled my pace and into 6th place approaching the first big steep climb up the Magaliesberg ridge. Ruan, not wanting to continue with the start line banter had flown away near the front as usual, but Cobus caught up to me on top and we ran together for a while, taking in the epic views and grandeur of the Magalies Ridge, and of course having a good chat and reminiscing on past adventures…  I had a solid run on the technical trails on the mountain and managed to pull a gap on the few chasers behind me. Pushing hard for 5th place, I put the hammer down in the last 4kms on the less technical jeep tracks, but was not able to haul 5th place in.

It was an awesome route and well-organized event as usual! Managed to hold onto 6th place in 2 hours 8 minutes, Ruan taking 4th and Cobus finishing fast in 7th. Top 10 for the 3 Nevarest members was an awesome bonus in a strong field of runners!

The Magaliesberg ridge has a very special place in my heart, and it is a privilege to be able to run on it!

Thanks as always to Nevarest, Keyhealth, Toyota SA and all our other fantastic sponsors for the continued support!
