Race Report: Chrissie Viljoen – TTA Provincial Duathlon champs

The morning of the provincial duathlon championships, held at Witpoort Primary School, dawned in freezing conditions. Everyone commented that they were happy to be doing a duathlon and not a triathlon!

The standard distance duathlon distance is a bit short and fast for me, but I decided to do the championships to test out the new setup on the time trail bike ahead of the 70.3 in Durban in three weeks time. The first 10km run were four laps of the school’s cross country course. My legs were not great, but I managed to stay within striking distance of the leading three ladies.

The bike course consisted of 4 x 10km laps that had a nasty climb on the way out. Within the first lap, I caught two of the ladies but Petruschka Constancon was having none of it. At each turn around the gap between us stayed constant.

On the last five kilometer run I realized I was not going to catch Petruschka, so I just enjoyed the rural setting, breathing fresh air for a change, listening to the rooster’s crow and enjoying the curious cattle spectating the race.

I managed to cross the line first in my age group and the second overall lady on the day.

Top 5 female results:

2) Chrissie Viljoen 2:36

3) Hanneli van Tonder 2:40

4) Marilise Vermaak 2:43

5) Natasha Fourie 2:46
