Race Report: Calen Hastie – Warrior #6

Another weekend of racing was underway in Nelspruit. This was the 2nd consecutive weekend of racing following the AR race, Cyanosis. Coming in the weekend of this race I felt prepared and my body was well recovered from the previous weekends AR (Narrowly dodging a cold). I felt confident and ready. I also had no idea what to expect from this race since we had never raced at Mbombela stadium before.

The day started hot, and I knew that it would still heat up a fair amount as the day continued. Nonetheless, my mind was focused on the race ahead of me. I knew one thing. It would be flat. Very flat. This was a boost for me, since I enjoy running on straight flats because of my speed.

The race started super fast and pretty much kept going at that same pace throughout the entire course of the race. I fell into the fifth position as I started to get comfortable with my pace. The first we obstacles there was a lot of position switches. I ended up in 5th position, the leaders being Anele Bans, Conrad Herbst, Calvin van Wyk and a local. I decided to just keep my pace and push harder on the flat straight sections. This worked very well as I began to catch up to Calvin at about 4 km to go. We then continued together up until the Iron rig. We both moved through the iron rig quickly. I then managed a small break and suddenly realised that we had caught up to the local runner who had faded from the front of the pack, as well as realising Conrad was 100 m ahead. I made my move. I managed to pass the local guy and move into the stadium area where we ran neck to neck up until mind the gap. From there I pulled ahead and went flat out for the last 1 km to take 3rd place on the podium with 1 minute behind 1st place.

Big thanks to the sponsors for the gear and entries. Without you, this would not be possible. I would also like to congratulate all the other team members in there efforts and achievements.
