Race Report: Calen Hastie – Trail Adventure Canoe Triathlon

Winter seasons make racing tough. But racing where water is concerned can be a more daunting fact.
Our first leg. The canoe leg took place on Rietvleis’ near Arctic waters.
8 km’s of circle repeats in the icy water. I hadn’t had much experience to go by, so I did my best to remain balanced but to no avail. I fell in once and that was it. I was out the water and struggled to find my breath again for near 30 min.
Finally, after getting warm I performed my cycling leg which went far better than the canoeing leg.
Thereafter we transitioned straight into the run. The run was a series of loops up a koppie which then progressed down back to transition. I felt the run a lot more especially after pushing hard on my cycling leg.
All in all, if it wasn’t for the dive in the waters I would have felt much better about my performance. Ultimately, I just need more work on my canoeing.
