Race Report: Alec Avierinos – Canoe Triathlon

This past weekend saw Ruth and I team up again to take on the Canoe triathlon.

The stunning day not that many people entered probably due to at least 3 other high profile races on the same weekend.

We started the paddle leg of about 7km and I could feel I had not paddled in a while, it took about 3 laps just to loosen up. We managed to finish without getting lapped by the really fast paddlers and still finished relatively close to the front of the field. We had a short run to transition and managed to pass 2 teams in the process and another couple in transition. We started out at a decent steady pace but were soon caught and passed by Malcolm and Jaco our top contenders for the male pairs win, they had taken a few swims on the canoe leg and were trying to catch up. For the rest of the 20km MTB leg we pretty much rode on our own I helped Ruth very little this time around. Just before the end, we caught up with a couple of teams. We had another super-fast transition and were off. As we left Greg was on his way in to finish his race and take the overall win. At about 1km into the run, we managed to catch and pass John Greef and his teammate which put us in the second position for the mixed pairs category. I took it easy on the run being careful not to re-injure my calf, this was my first run off the treadmill. Ruth helped me with a push on the climbs and we even power walked the one climb up to the reservoir. The 5km route loops around quite a bit so we saw our teammates Kobus and Janekke on their way to finish their run and take the win, this after racing and winning the 6-hour foot Rogaine champs the previous day. We had a most enjoyable race together and managed to finish in 2nd position in the mixed category not too sure where we came overall. The Nevarest team had a great race claiming 1st and 2nd Solo Male Greg and Craig  1st Male pairs Malcolm and Jaco 1st and 2nd Mixed pairs Cobus and Janneke and Alec and Ruth. We need to add some more strong ladies to our team for 2018. Looking forward to the next opportunity to race with Ruth.
